My work incorporates contemporary and historical images such as consumer packaging, formal figures, iconography and text arranged in conceptually layered configurations. The physical processes and conceptual explorations marry to express an idea and create an emotional response. Further, the images and environments that I create take the viewer on a contemplative journey.
For example, in my series “Cuentos”, I present text and images that are embossed in to thin, metal squares and displayed in a series of grid formations. At first glance, the viewer can see a beautiful arrangement of copper and aluminium metals in various, natural colors and textures. A journey of reflection begins soon after. The grid formation appears like a map. Forty nine, six inch by six inch squares are configured in to a larger, four foot by four foot, symm etrical grid. “Border” images and symbols appear in the work. The surfaces of my metal demand to be touched, explored and understood on whatever level the observer can manage. For this work, the observer has an opportunity to ask the question “who am I and where do I fit in?”
On another level, I address contemporary issues and individual experiences. My recent food related series includes work titled “Mexican Harvest”. I reference diet and health, self perception, and relationships. The ingredients are listed on the packaging that is transferred on to the metal surface. Also, the brand name is “Mexican Harvest”.
Finally, my work is about my insatiable desire to capture the essence of “reality” and its evolving nature. I tell stories via images and materials that become enigmatic presentations in two and three dimensions. Often, my work captures a moment in time. This display and use of my materials always takes in to account that all things in the universe move from orderly states to disorderly states. Additionally, I have explored topics such as romance, gay rights and mass consumption.
